While Christie-Balles exercise leadership in challenging the Mayor, Whelan does nothing but coast along as he has for 30 years in government
Video from the Chamber of Commerce Candidate forum on Tuesday evening shows Mayor Langford launching a diatribe against everyone but himself about his mismanagement of Atlantic City. And Senator Jim Whelan, a member of the same Democratic Party as the Mayor, sat there and remained completely silent.
?I strongly disagree with Mayor Langford and how he has run Atlantic City,? said Republican Senate Candidate Frank Balles. ?But Senator Whelan refuses to lead and refuses to challenge the Mayor from his own party and his own home town despite all the evidence showing the gross mismanagement in Atlantic City that has led to an increased property tax burden on all of us.
?Mayor Langford bragged about how only half of the property taxes in Atlantic City go to fund municipal government while 35% go to fund the schools,? said Balles. ?In most municipalities the municipal share is far less than what is dedicated to schools, showing again that Atlantic City spends too much. They spend too much on staff, too much on raises for himself and his friends on Council, too much on cash-cow payouts for unused sick time, too much on Dodge Durangos and it has to come to an end for property taxpayers throughout Atlantic County. It was for these reasons that Governor Christie called Langford a ?rogue mayor? who is ?dead wrong? and that Atlantic City is one of the nation?s worst-run ?most God-awful, wasteful governments in America.? Does Senator Whelan agree with Governor Christie?
?I?ve been clear and vocal about where I stand, calling for a state take-over for Atlantic City government and agreeing with Governor Christie that the state needs to take a greater role here,? said Balles. ?But Senator Whelan sat silently next to Mayor Langford while he continues to drive his city further into the ground, botching tax appeals and whistleblower cases. He refuses to challenge him. He says nothing. The video shows it.
?It?s no wonder Senator Gormley has called Whelan a ?coward.? We need a Senator who will lead.?
