Davis Calls on Callaway Associate to Leave the Board of Elections

March 22, 2007

EGG HARBOR TWP. ? In light of Governor Jon Corzine’s recent re-appointment of Bernice ?Sandy? Couch to the Atlantic County Board of Elections, Atlantic County Republican Chairman Keith Davis issued the following statement calling on this Callaway associate to immediately tender her resignation:

“It is intolerable to have Couch remain on the Board of Elections. She must resign immediately.

“Craig Callaway and his followers have abused the absentee ballot system, causing turmoil in local elections. Having a close Calloway associate in a position of reviewing and counting the same absentee and provisional ballots his organization is turning in undermines the public?s confidence in the integrity of our election system.

“We cannot allow Craig Callaway to have someone on the inside at the Board and the fact that County Democrat Chairman Ron Ruff recommended Couch for appointment further demonstrates that the Callaway organization’s influence and corruption permeates throughout the Atlantic County Democrat Party.

“Although the Board is comprised of partisan members, each is expected to avoid the slightest hint of impropriety. Ms. Couch rode to the sentencing hearing of Craig Callaway, wrote a letter to the federal judge asking leniency for Callaway, and was part of a group making obscene gestures at bystanders — all of which makes a mockery of our election system and cannot be tolerated. This is not appropriate behavior for a public servant and casts doubt over every action she makes at the Board.

“The sooner she removes herself from the Board of Elections, the better it will be for the voters of Atlantic County.”
